How to learn and progress with your Italian

Are you ready to get Back-to-School? Hours and hours of dedication, reading, a bit of Italian grammar, some friendly conversation and so much more will help for sure, but there are a few tricks to improve your Italian and make these hours of hard work really pay off.

1. Identify what makes you passionate about the Italian language

Passion is first and foremost, especially when it comes to Italian. Each and every one of us has a different reason to learn Italian, be it Dante, Capri, the Italian riviera, Venetian regattas, Italian cuisine or Italian fashion. And the list goes on!

It is key that you don’t make it feel like work. Whether you are learning Italian for a trip or for your career, you want to have fun and motivation to fuel your drive.

2. Create your own personalized Italian phrasebook

Based on your motivation, think about what are the most important and common words you may use in your everyday life and in conversation.

Think about words and expressions that you need to immediately master to best describe yourself and create a connection with others. Your personal history, family, friends, hometown, education, or career are all great subjects and ice breakers.

Continue to add to your phrasebook as you continue to speak and learn Italian: having a dictionary that you have created yourself gives you much more control over the language and empowers you to express yourself.

3. Download an Italian language app

Choose from a multitude of free apps for download onto your tablet or mobile device. Italian language apps can be searched for Windows, Apple, or Android devices.

If you are short on time during the week (and who isn’t?) and you need a tool that helps you remember verbs, conjugations, adjectives and the like, apps can be your best friends.

Creating your own flashcards is a great way to memorize vocabulary, verbs conjugations and useful expressions. Whether you commit them to paper or use a language app to create them, make sure to personalize them for better results.
